The Library At Alexandria
Today at the Donnelly Public Library I read the story of Eratosthenes of Cyrene, who calculated the circumference of the Earth with astounding accuracy. His story went on to talk about many Greek and Roman works and texts used by scholars today and how they were produced at Alexandria.
The students were intrigued by the story, but also the place. Alexandria, the home of the great library.
The library is a story of sibling rivalry, romance, kingdoms, and family. Many mysteries surround the library, but also the affairs of the heart that surrounded the demise of the great library.
We took our group to visit the new library in Alexandria. Alexandria is in the Northern part of Egypt along the Mediterranean Coast. From the Library you can hear waves crashing and smell the salt. Alexandria is riddled with Greek and Roman influences throughout the community. Inside the Library, one recognizes the influence of the Greeks and the Romans, but also has an overwhelming sense of Egyptian pride.
Floor after floor of books. Sarah and myself were in heaven. For $1 more you can visit the manuscript hale, the antiquities wing or one of the numerous museum / exhibit halls. The place is spectacular.
The magical stairway, the great entry ways and so much more. .
I know this quick picture tour doesn’t capture it all. In short, every library has to much to see in a day especially Alexandria.
